The Dramatic iPhoneography of Vassilis Rogakos

What is your name and where do you live?

VR:  My name is Vassilis Rogakos. I was born and live in Athens, Greece.

How did you get started in mobile photography? What device do you use?

VR:  I resisted getting a cell phone for a very long time, but I was introduced to Instagram through my good friend (@blackbirdtales) and he set up an account for me about one year ago. Then I bought my first iPhone 5S in August 2014 and I am still using it. Its simplicity was a relief. I was amazed how easy taking and editing my photos on my iPhone turned out to be. That’s how I got hooked on mobile photography.

Mob Street No.13

"I'm a voyeur. I say that with no embarrassment. If I could have a superpower, being invisible would be it, no question. I'm fascinated by human behavior; observing people and seeing how much story gets told without a lot of dialogue, and how much our brain fills in."
~Thomas Schlamme

I wonder of we all realize how endlessly fascinating we are to one another. I could people watch all day. When I was younger, my Dad would often drive our family down to the L.A. Airport and we would sit in the waiting area and watch the departures and arrivals. That was before all the airport security kicked in and you could sit right at the gate. I particularly remember the reunions of returning soldiers from the Viet Nam war with their loved ones. Maybe that's where I developed my love of people watching. Now I get the same feeling looking at the photos from the Mob Street Flickr Group. If you're a street photographer using a mobile device, you're welcome to join in!

GIVEAWAY - Red Dot Camera Released

There's a new manual camera app that just launched - Red Dot Camera. Honestly, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the ins and outs of manual camera apps, so rather than do a "review" I decided to interview the creator of the app and let my readers decide for themselves. I will note that compared to other manual camera apps I have used, this one is way simpler in its design and ease of use which may be enough for me to do more experimentation!

You may get a chance to try the app for FREE by signing up for the giveaway. Five lucky winners will receive promo codes. Winners will be selected by random draw on Thursday, September 10th at 7:00 p.m. PDT. Just leave a comment on this post to enter the draw.

The app sells for $2.99 in The App Store.

Red Dot Camera
What is your name and what is your affiliation with Lifelike Apps, Inc?

DS:  My name is Dotan Saguy. I am the founder and CEO of Lifelike Apps, Inc. But I’m also an avid photographer.

Although Lifelike Apps has developed other applications the focus of this interview is on your latest app, Red Dot Camera. Please tell me what inspired the development of this manual camera app for the iPhone.

DS:  I’ve been a serious amateur photographer for the past 20+ years and recently have fallen in love with street photography. So after using Nikon SLR's for many years, I migrated to rangefinder style equipment. I shot Fuji mirrorless cameras for a while and eventually it became my gateway drug to Leica. I’ve been shooting a Leica M Monochrom for the past year and absolutely loving it. That’s what inspired me to design Red Dot Camera: I wanted a rangefinder style manual camera I could always have with me for the many times I don’t have my Leica around.

Mob Paint Monday No. 44

“We are no longer in an age of needing to be approved and edited by larger companies before we are allowed to share our creations. This is the era of Do-It-Yourself. Research, investigate and try. You owe it to yourself, to your art and to the Creator to find a way to share that which you are and that which can help, aid, inspire and encourage others. Go for it and prepare to win, because you get what you prepare for.” ― Lala Mae ButterflyFreedom's Daughter: Poems & Art

Showcasing samples of the beautiful images shared in the Mob Paint Flickr Group is one of my favorite activities here at Art of Mob. Each showcase provides a chance to view work being done by various artists around the world.

In order to help this be not only a visual delight but a learning experience, I have asked the artists to provide a list of the apps used. Not all were received in time for posting. If you are a member of the Mob Paint Flickr Group and would like your work considered for the monthly showcase, I ask that you include the apps used when posting to the group. Thanks in advance for sharing your process.

GIVEAWAY - JixiPix RipPix Released

JixiPix has brought us a number of photo apps that offer great special effects. You may be familiar with Artista Impresso, Artista Oil , Portrait Painter, Aquarella Watercolor, Grungetastic just to name a few!

Their latest release, RipPix is perfect for those of us looking to collage elements or isolate elements of our images and apply textures separately to the background and foreground.

Here's the description from the App Store:

"RipPix uses worn and stained photo effects to give your photo a nostalgic quality then gives you the ability to turn any subject into a center detail by simply tracing around on the image. Cut out a bird, flower, person or tree then size, rotate and move it around on the background photo to create a beautiful paper accent piece with soft shadow. Using a foreground and background photo, this remarkably easy app can add subjects back into photos, create simple collages of friends, blend scenery together, or add focus with cut out objects. From the romantic to the whimsical each piece you create will have a unique and distinctive touch."

The app includes 55 Worn Textures, 34 Aged Papers, 20 one-touch presets, ability to replace foreground photo, Rip Tool to add or remove edges and cut photos, Move Image Tool, and Three Edge Styles.

I grabbed a few of my already edited images and applied a little RipPix magic to them. I didn't spend a lot of time on these as I wanted to get the blog post written. I can't wait until I have more time to experiment and layer using RipPix.
