The Whole Story - Ivan Bradauskas

The minute I saw this photo by Ivan Bradauskas, I was intrigued. I'm not surprised it had over 170 comments on Instagram. And now for The Whole Story! (Since Ivan's first language is not English, he has allowed me to rephrase the text he sent to me.)

The Whole Story

I was inspired by the autumn forest to create this image. To process the image I used Adobe Photoshop Touch, Adobe Photoshop express, Mextures and Superimpose. It seemed like an interesting idea to arrange the umbrellas atop the trees; It seemed to me a curious idea to arrange the umbrellas on the tops of the trees; I think is a bit strange and surreal

Dramatic iPhone Portraiture by David Booker

What is your name and where do you live?

DB:  My name is David Booker and I live in Belper, Derbyshire, England

How did you get started in mobile photography? What device do you use?

DB:  As a keen photographer all of my adult life, I began taking mobile images pretty much as soon as cameras were available on the earliest smart-phones, but I guess it wasn’t until the release of the iPhone 4 – and the significant increase in camera quality – that I began to see the potential for using it as a serious tool for creating more artistic images. I’m currently using the iPhone 6 Plus.

Do you have a traditional photography or art background?

DB:  Since the age of about 14 I’ve progressed through using film (and learning about developing) through to digital photography (and Photoshop) through to mobile photography, but all for my own creative outlet rather than professionally or with any formal training. Both photography and art (in the wider sense) have played an important part in my life and remain something that I’m always drawn to.

Create Your Own Textures Part II

Last year, I posted a tutorial Make Your Own Textures With Effexy App. I'm not sure what has happened with Effexy as it crashes when I open it on my iPad, but not to worry...there are plenty of other apps you can use to make your own textures. This will allow you to create images like this:

Here's a quick tutorial to show you how:

Photographing the Quiet Places ~ Jaime Brandel

Geri's Introduction

I view many images on Instagram daily. I'm sorry if I don't always take the time to like or comment, but I do see them and am constantly inspired and moved by what I see. I know when I visit the gallery of Jaime Brandel, I will be instantly transported into a dreamy word of muted colors and soft textures highlighting peaceful and serene scenic imagery. I am delighted to present this interview with the very talented Jaime Brandel.

-------------------------------

What is your name and where do you live?

JB:  My name is Jaime Brandel and I live in Victoria, B.C., Canada

How did you get started in mobile photography? What device do you use?

JB:  I resisted getting a cell phone for a very long time. I really didn’t think I needed one, and I didn’t see the point of using a camera on a phone when I had a much better quality camera to make images with. But that camera is heavy! And I can’t carry it around everywhere I go, tucked in my back pocket. So I eventually saw the value in having a phone at my disposal no matter where I was, and finally broke down and got an iPhone4s. I have since graduated to an iPhone6 and couldn’t be happier. I wasn’t inspired to buy a device to use as a phone.. I bought it just for the camera!

Seeing in Black and White

When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls!”
― Ted Grant

I will admit that there is something unique and powerful about a black and white photograph. I don't normally shoot in black and white except when experimenting with contrast by hornbeck, but I do have a percentage of images that I convert to black and white during the editing process.

Recently, I made the decision to start a new Instagram account and post all of the black and white images currently scattered through my main account. This account gericentonze_bw definitely has a cohesive look that sets it apart from my gericentonze account.

With only a handful of followers and photos posted, several B&W communities on Instagram have already featured my images which is very encouraging. Maybe there is something inherently more powerful about a black and white photograph.

What do you think?

Mobile Photographer of the Year Michał Koralewski

Drum roll...the winner of the IPPA (iPhone Photography Awards) for Photographer of the Year First Place Award goes to Michał Koralewski! (Congrats also to David Craik and Yvonne Lu the runners up).

Michał has been supportive of Art of Mob since the beginning and I thought surely I had interviewed him by now. He was included in so many showcases that I assumed he had already been a featured iPhone photographer. I'm correcting that oversight today! I'm PROUD to present this interview with the Mobile Photographer of the Year Michał Koralewski.

What is your name and where do you live?

MK:  My name is Michał Koralewski, I live in Poland in a small village of Kozieglowy, very close to the beautiful city of Poznan.

How did you get started in mobile photography? What device do you use?

MK:  Well, I think it was somewhere between 2009 and 2010. I was amazed how easily it became to take and edit my photos with my new iPhone 3G. I started to experiment with filters, textures and collages. It was something totally different from what I have done before. Two years later I bought an iPhone 4s and my passion for mobile photography grew even more and it’s still growing! Now I take photos with the iPhone 5s equipped with COVR Photo lens case. It's a wonderful set for street photography, allowing me to take photos discreetly without interfering with what I’m trying to capture.
